Many people have not had the wonderful opportunity to trek to Bhairav Kunda as this is a newly opened trekking destination. This trek gets its name from the high altitude (4,240m) lake of ‘Bhairav Kunda’. Bahirav Kunda trek is one of the most closely accessible treks nearby Kathmandu.

Lying quite close to the Tibetan border, thousands of domestic tourists visit this region due to its religious significance. The Nepalese month of ‘Bhadra’ (which falls in the English months of July/ August) is when thousands of Hindu devotees come to this lake. Apart from the religious beauty, this region is also quite popular for the awesome views of landscape and surrounding mountains.

You can get some astonishing views of the mountains including Rolwaling range, Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Madiya (6,257m), Phurbi Ghhyachu (6,637m), Jugal Himal and the magnificent Tibetan Himalayan range during the Bhairav Kunda Trekking by The Great Adventure Treks. Bhairav Kunda trek by The Great Adventure Trek starts with a UNESCO World Heritage sightseeing tour in Kathmandu. Next day, you will drive along lush scenic hills to Jalbire. From Jalbire, the trek takes you along some scenic villages like Chanaute, Khani Gaon, Forest Camp, Pati eventually to Bhairav Kunda.

Bhairav Kunda is a great lake with clear turquoise waters that are sure delight you. The word Bhairav in the Sanskrit language refers to the destructive form of Lord Shiva. A bath in this holy lake is thought to awash all the sins of a person. You can also visit a Hindu temple that is nearby the Bhairav Kunda lake.

The villages you will encounter during this trek give you great insights into the culture, traditions, and the lifestyle of various ethnicities like Brahmins, Chhetris, and Newars. The people you will encounter serve you with wonderful hospitality and respect.

Bhairav Kunda Trekking Difficulty

Bhairav Kunda trek lies in a relatively low altitude of the Langtang region. You will also have two days of exploration/ acclimatization during the trip. One of the days is in Khani Gaon while the other one is in Bhairav Kunda.

The highest altitude you will get to in this trek is 4250 meters at Bhairav Kunda. This is lower with respect to other high-altitude treks in Nepal. However, you might encounter some steep uphills especially on the day you trek to Bhirav Kunda.

You will trek for merely 9 days in this trip. Most part of the trail is well-marked.

Taking all of these factors into consideration, Bhairav Kunda is a moderate trek.

Extended Trips

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel.

You will arrive at the Tribhuvan Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal. Outside the airport terminal, the representatives from The Great Adventure Treks will be there to greet you. They will not only help you transfer you to your hotel but also help you check in the hotel. You will get all the relevant information about the hotel you will be staying as well as the Bhairav Kunda Trek. If there are any other related information about the trek, your guide will answer your queries.

Day 02: Half day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu

Tday, you will head out for a half day sightseeing tour of the capital city of Kathmandu. The capital city of Nepal- Kathmandu- is one of the most gorgeous places in the world for sightseeing. The heritage of its ancient culture, medieval architecture of this city, coupled with modern as well as ancient buildings gives it a wonderful touch.

Pashupatinath Temple:

Pashupatinath Temple is the go-to place for Hindus in Nepal. Lying on the banks of the river Bagmati, Pashupatinath temple is the biggest Hindu temple in the world. In addition, it is also the holiest. Pashupatinath temple is a two-storied temple. It also has numerous other temples surrounding it. Yearly, tens of millions of Hindu devotees come for holy purposes in this temple.

Boudhanath Stupa:

Boudhanath is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal. UN declared it as a World Heritage Site in 1979 A.D. The Buddha’s eyes in Boudhanath stupa are quite famous. The Buddhist prayer wheels are found abundantly in this temple. Rounding the prayer wheels while encircling the temple is a very good way of spending time in this historical temple dating back to 5th century CE.

Kathmandu and Patan Durbar Squares:

Kathmandu Durbar Square lies at the heart of Kathmandu. The same can be said of Patan Durbar Square which lies splendidly in the heart of Patan. Both of them served as residential palaces of the kings of Kathmandu and Patan respectively in the past. The architecture of the palaces as well as the surrounding temples are a thing of beauty.

Krishna Mandir, Hanuman Dhoka complex, and the numerous museums located in these Durbar Squares are the most popular tourist attractions here.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Jalbire 1000m. 3 – 4 Hrs journeys

You will head out to Jalbire today in the morning on a scenic drive. The drive is to Jalbire(1000 meters) is 4 hours long. Along the way, you can enjoy some delightful views of the mountains. You head North East on the road towards Nepal-Tibet Frontier to Balephi town. This town used to be one of the main towns on the trade route to Tibet. The highway you will drive on is also known as the Nepal-Tibet Friendship Highway.

The whole Balephi Valley is magnificent and from here our drive leads further on the dirt road to Jalbire. After driving for one hour following the river upstream, you will reach your first night camp at Jalbire. Jalbire is a nice Newar village set on the banks of the Balephi River. This village gives you insights into the Newari culture. You can also go to a holy Hindu temple of Lord Vishnu in Jakbire.

Day 04: Trek to Chanaute 1,350m. 4 – 5 Hrs

Today is an easy gradual walk about 4-5 hours along a road to Chanaute(1350 meters). The path follows through some small scattered Tamang villages and farms with views of the stunning waterfall before reaching Chanaute. Chanaute is a small village where the majority of the population is of the Brahmans and Chettri people. Your overnight camp is located by the school. You relax and enjoy great mountain views from your camp.

Day 05: Trek to Khani Gaon 2000m. 5 – 6 Hrs.

Today is a wonderful long day’s trekking of about six hours from Chanaute to Khani Gaon(2000 meters). The walk is a tad strenuous climb as you trek through some steep uphill on narrow trails. You will trek past charming villages and streams on the route. As you walk past local schools, you will reach Khani Gaon. It is a Newar village. It is also known as Dalle Pokhari. It gets its name from a ‘cute lake’ tucked in a hollow near the school.

This village is a historically significant village. Around the mid-18th century, before the unification of Nepal, there was a fight between Gorkha and Bhaktapur. After the battle, the people of Bhaktapur fled and settled here. This is why the village is full of Newar people. Your campsite at Khani Gaon offers excellent mountain views.

Day 06: At Khani Gaon – Rest day

Today is your leisure day in Khani gaon. You will get to explore and to study the culture and tradition of this picturesque Newari village. You can trek to Dalle Pokhari. You can also interact with the local Newari people in this village. You can taste some delectable Newari food too.

Day 07: Trek to Forest Camp 3,150m. 6 – 7 Hrs

You will have a strenuous walk today. You will mostly trek steep uphills through the cool and serene rhododendron forest. The trek takes you along some deep alpine forest which offers peace and tranquility. En route, you will also cross several cow-hers and Shepherd’s shelter. It is also a wonderful opportunity to get glimpses of wildlife and birds around this area. After trekking for 6-7 hours, you will reach Forest Camp. You will set up your camp here in the middle of a forest.

Day 08: Trek to Pati 3,765m. 4 – 5 Hrs

Trekking today is a steep uphill climb. You will walk at a normal pace. You should take today’s trek easy. You also have to take a few short breaks in between. The walk finally leads to the top of the ridge. The ridge offers striking views of the surrounding landscapes and of the snow-capped mountains. The ridge lies in the midst of the alpine pine and rhododendron forest. After trekking for nearly 4-5 hours, you will reach the wonderful site at Pati. The campsite at Pati offers glorious mountain views. You can find rest houses here made for the pilgrims. The rest houses are for those who come for a holy homage pilgrimage to Bhairav Kund on auspicious time as per the Hindu calendar.

Day 09: Trek to Bhairav Kunda 4,250m. 3 – 4 Hrs

After having a hearty morning breakfast, you will leave the camp at Pati. You will trek uphill for an hour or more to reach to the top of a ridge. From the ridge, you can have glamorous views of the mountains. The trail past the ridge is a level one. After trekking for three hours, you will reach your final destination at Bhairav Kunda(4250 meters). Today’s trek is 4-5 hours long.

Day 10: At Bhairav Kunda.

Today is a full rest day at Bhairav Kunda, However, the day is anything but idle. You will go for short hikes and exploration of the surrounding area. You can trek to the nearby hill for better panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. You can also get wonderful views of the snow-capped mountains of Jugal Himal range.

You will also head out to Bhairav Kunda. Bhairav Kunda is a stunning holy lake (Kund means ‘lake’) that lies at an altitude of 4,250m. It is an important pilgrimage for Hindus. Around the months of June/July, many pilgrims come to pay their respects at the Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Bhairav. Many devotees believe Lord Bhairav to be a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Devotees also take bath in the holy lake. Legend has it that a bath here washes away the sin of a hundred lifetimes.

Day 11: Trek to Sherpa Gaon 2,500m. 6 Hrs.

You can get wonderful sunrise views in the morning in Sherpa Gaon. After breakfast here, you will leave this holy spot with an uphill walk of near two hours to reach the top of a hill. From this hill, you can see grand views over Langtang, Jugal Himal range, Rolwaling range as well of the Tibetan range. From here, you will trek down slowly on a steep path for about four hours through the stunning forest. After trekking for a total of 6 hours from BHairav Junda, you will reach Sherpa Gaon for the overnight stop.

Day 12: Trek to Larche 1,500m. 5 Hrs

Today is the last day of Bhairav Kunda trek. You will follow the trail downhill for four hours as you reach the bank of the Bhote Koshi River. As you trek past this river, you will reach your last overnight at Larche(1500 meters). The trek from Sherpa Gaon to Larche is 5 hours long. You will stay in a camp in Larche. After the camp is set, you can hike for half an hour to the natural hot spring. The hot spring allows time for relaxation as you can rest your tired body here.

Day 13: From Larche drive back to Kathmandu by bus

After the end of this memorable and adventurous trekking to Bhairav Kunda, you will head back to Kathmandu. The drive to Kathmandu is really scenic as you drive past some wonderful settlements along the way. The drive from Larche to Kathmandu is nearly 6 hours long.

Day 15: Transfer to Airport for International departure.

You will leave for the Tribhuvan international airport today along with the representatives of The Great Adventure Treks for your flight back home.They will drop you off at the airport around 3 hours before your scheduled flight. You to make sure that you have your air ticket and other necessary travel documents. Great Adventure Treks could also arrange another tour for you in Nepal if you want to.
